Bio
Clare Sturges is a BAFTA Cymru Award-winning director working in narrative and documentary.
She was the first woman to win the Welsh BAFTA Breakthrough Award in 2015 for her documentary SEXWORK, LOVE & MR RIGHT (ABC / Apple TV), which she produced and directed. She went on to win the BAFTA Cymru Short Film Award for her short documentary MY BRIEF ETERNITY. The film was nominated for Best Short Doc at London Short Film Festival, longlisted for a British Independent Film Award and the EE BAFTA for British Short Film.
In 2019, Clare wrote and directed BFI-funded narrative short THE ARBORIST, starring Catrin Stewart (Stella, Dr Who, The Library Suicides) and BAFTA Cymru nominee Rhodri Meilir (Hinterland, In My Skin, Pride). The film premiered on BBC Two and was nominated for the BAFTA Cymru Short Film Award in 2020.
Clare has shadowed on HETV productions including THE CROWN, HIS DARK MATERIALS, KIRI and feature film DREAM HORSE with director Euros Lyn. She has been shortlisted for the 4Stories On The Edge narrative directing initiative for Channel 4. In 2021, she was mentored by director Rebecca Johnson (Honeytrap, Call The Midwife, The Pact) through the Directors UK Inspire programme.
In 2022, Clare directed documentary single CHARLIE MACKESY: THE BOY, THE MOLE, THE FOX, THE HORSE AND ME for Apple TV+ / BBC Two – a profile of the Oscar-winning artist and illustrator – for which she received a BAFTA Cymru Director Factual Award nomination in 2023.
Across 2023, Clare directed episodes of BBC continuing drama DOCTORS and shadowed writer Andrea Chalupa (Mr Jones, 2020) through script development on her independent feature film ON THE RECORD, based on the life story of American journalist Dorothy Thompson.
Clare has received bursaries from Ffilm Cymru Wales and the Welsh Broadcasting Trust to support her development as a writer/director of scripted work.
