Bio
Clare Sturges is a BAFTA Cymru Award-winning director working across scripted drama and documentary.
Across 2024-25, Clare directed and produced the Amazon Original feature documentary SURVIVING THE TUNISIA BEACH ATTACK, which reached No.4 in the UK Top Ten on release. The film explores the lasting impact of the 2015 terrorist attack through the experiences of survivors and families affected.
In 2022, she directed documentary single CHARLIE MACKESY: THE BOY, THE MOLE, THE FOX, THE HORSE AND ME for Apple TV and BBC Two – a portrait of the Oscar-winning artist and illustrator – for which she received a BAFTA Cymru Director: Factual nomination.
Her narrative short THE ARBORIST, starring Catrin Stewart (Stella, Doctor Who) and Rhodri Meilir (Hinterland, In My Skin, Pride), premiered on BBC Two and was nominated for the BAFTA Cymru Short Film Award.
Earlier work includes the BAFTA Cymru-winning short documentary MY BRIEF ETERNITY, nominated for Best Short Documentary at the London Short Film Festival and longlisted for both the British Independent Film Awards and the BAFTA for British Short Film. Her documentary SEXWORK, LOVE & MR RIGHT – which she produced and directed – won the BAFTA Cymru Breakthrough Award, making Clare the first woman to receive the honour.
Clare has directed episodes of BBC continuing drama DOCTORS and shadowed on high-end television productions including THE CROWN, HIS DARK MATERIALS and KIRI, as well as the feature film DREAM HORSE with director Euros Lyn. She has also shadowed writer Andrea Chalupa (Mr Jones) during development of her independent feature film ON THE RECORD, based on the life of American journalist Dorothy Thompson.
Clare has been mentored through the Directors UK Inspire programme by director Rebecca Johnson (Honeytrap, Call the Midwife, The Pact), and has received development support from Ffilm Cymru Wales, the Welsh Government and the Welsh Broadcasting Trust.
She is currently developing her debut supernatural feature film NOCTILUCENT, a supernatural drama that builds on the emotional and atmospheric territory first explored in THE ARBORIST.
